Literature Research

Aesthetics and the Environment: The Appreciation of Nature, Art, and Architecture by Allen Carlson Review by: Donald W. Crawford “Carlson attempts to present a consistent and defensible theory of the aesthetic appreciation of nature, and hopes that in addition, this theory will illuminate this world between nature and art. One feature of Carlson’s theory which will puzzle many readers is that the experience of scenic landscapes is precluded from being part of the aesthetic appreciation of nature. His reasoning is that the experience of scenery is not the experience of nature as nature but rather the experience of nature as art, being concerned with compositional value.”

Inspiration Images

To visually represent the inspiration of the concept for this project, these inspiration images which are juxtaposed images, manipulated through photoediting software, reflect the essence of the project “Aramesh”, a mountain resort.

Site Analysis

DUNGA GALI

The chosen site, in t he Northern Mountains of Pakistan, is the point where the track to Mushkpuri starts and is linked to Dunga Gali bazaar and is directly connected to the road linking it to the main tourist access.

The mountain resort is designed while preserving the context that surrounds it and the facade of the building is made porous to allow the outside views to pour inside. The overall form sits in the elevated land in a linear geometry which in one way because the straight surfaces help with framing the views better and working along the outdoor decks or terraces but it limits the opportunity to capture multiplie views all around.

MESO SITE ANALYSIS

The site selected for the project has been selected on the basis of suitable viewing points, accessibility and natural contours while also being located at the junction of tourist activities and creating an opportunity for a resting spot.

MACRO SITE ANALYSIS

The macro site analysis included a detailed contextual study of the Northern region of Pakistan that falls under “Galiyat Development Authorities”. This provided a better understanding of the tourist attractions on the site and the division of areas.

MICRO SITE ANALYSIS (CONCEPT-BASED)

The micro site analysis was an in-depth study of the site including accessibility, wind direction, sun direction, contextual elements, on-site circulation, vegetation, and contours. This is wher the actual resort would be built.

PRECEDENT STUDY 1

BIG Unveils A Ski Resort in Lapland

BIG designed a 47,000 sqm ski resort and recreational area in Levi, Finland. The future Ski Village will transform the existing Levi ski resort into a world class destination, offering top quality accommodation and leisure services for skiers of all levels and demands.

The ski resort blends in with the mountain terrain and provides breathtaking opportunities to capture various views of the surroundings, the resort has two parts one is curvilinear which was specifically designed for skiing and hence the curved form, the second part consists of buildings which are in the form of triangular blocks in order to create pocketed spaces outside the building and give the feeling of the outside being semi-covered in a way. Connections are formed through pathways and views are preserved.

PRECEDENT STUDY 2

Weilburg Terraces, Germany

The design of the ‘Rathaus-Terraces’ originates from the Baroque terraced-landscape building typology, found nearby in the Weilburg Castle Gardens, and develops them into a contemporary form of landscape building. A building as an integral part of the landscape allows the project to blend into the surrounding context while inviting inhabitation and managing to create specific urban character towards some if its city context. In this way, an active urban frontage can be created facing the old city centre, while the facade towards the river valley blends into the rhythm of rock cliffs and forested slopes along the Lahn river.

DESIGN

Aramesh- A Mountain Resort

The conceptual design for the mountain resort in Dunga Gali, “Aramesh” was based around the idea of merging into the mountain contours to find a peaceful escape. The form had to be site-sensitive, incorporating views of its surroundings and capture the essence of a shelter.

SKETCHES

Add Heading

The design starts to develop with initial sketches of the form blending into the natural contours of the site.

Development

Design development

The contours align with the study of intersecting triangles and polygons. This interesting study is what helped with the development of the plan by juxtaposing these intersecting shapes on the site-map.

Master Plan

Once the plan and form are finalized, the final masterplan is designed and planned.
The masterplan features access points, on-site parking, roof plan of the built structure and important site contours and terraces.

Section

The section of a multi-level building that is built on a natural mountain terrain is always informative and better explains the spatial division of the building.

First Floor

Floor Plan

The first floor is the main interactive public floor and is the main activity zone. The functions of the different spces within this floor plan are marked and mentioned on the drawing. This floor plan follows the natural terrain of the site and provides a sense of interconnectivity.

Second Floor

Floor Plan

The second floor plan is the main residential floor with hotel bedrooms designed to accommodate guests overnight.

Third Floor

Floor Plan

The third and final floor plan is designed to accommodate a private dinning area for guests that spend the night with a beautiful balcony that connects the outside views to the inside. The circular stairwell is designed to provide a contrast in the angular design and give a sense of vertically elevating through thee site views.

Structure

The overall building is designed on a grid structure.

Structure

Roof Structure

The roof of the building os tapered due to the extreme weather of the area and to accommodate load distribution during heavy snowfall.

Interior

The interior design of the mountain resort is an amalgamation of modern and vernacular architecture. The interior uses vernacular materials and has efficiently captures the opportunities of visual connectivity.
